"Before We started taking pictures of Mexico, we traveled to many
remote places in Europe. We've walked through the South of Spain, Sicily,
Finland, Poland, Russia - the places where the Western civilization and
other cultures meet. However, the travel of the cultural fusion took a
crucial turn in Mexico. We found ourselves in a small village where we
opened the door of an old cathedral. At this very moment, Islam, the Baroque
and mandala, all mixed in one space, and formed a unique microcosm. It
seemed to follow the order of monotheism, but the past time got multiplied
from its inside, and we found expressions which spilled from the order.
And there was the cosmos taken from deeply inside of the heart of humans
expressed in the real world. This God's house which they made showed the
entirety of the human heart. There were not any fascinating places like
this in the remote areas around Europe. We think Mexico
before the Spanish came was very separate from European cultures, just
like Japan. Europeanized Mexican cathedrals and icons could be the mirror
image of the modern Japanese cultures that were established as totally
different forms."
