26th Q Ei Exhibition - Search for Light

May 16 Sat. - May 30 Sat. 2015
GALLERY OPEN ON ALL DAYS

The life of Q Ei, who passed away at the age of 48 in 1960, can be decsribed as the "Artist of light".
He begun using a camera at early stage of his career, later moving onto establishing a photogram technique in which he shined light directly to a photographic paper to create an image (he named this technique photo dessin). Through his life, Q Ei created over 2,000 works.
His search for "light" is apparant on all of his works including watercolors and oil paintings. His pointillism works in his last years was his goal as the "Artist of light".
We have been hosting Q Ei exhibitions since our opening in 1995, and this time as 26th, we are naming the exhibition "Search for light", exhibiting around 30 works including oil paintings, watercolors and stencils used as a making material for photo dessins, along with photo dessins.

Q Ei (1911-1960)
Q Ei, whose early work was done under his real name of Hideo Sugita, was born in Miyazaki Prefecture in 1911. At age 15, his criticism started appearing in the art magazines "Atelier" and "Mizue".
Q Ei’s first collection of photo-dessins, was published in 1936 as "The Reason for Sleep" (Nemuri No Riyu). In 1937, he set up the art organization "Free Art Association" (Jiyu Bijutsu Kyokai). As to criticize the established public group and Japan art world, he set up "Democratic Artists Association" in 1951.
Q Ei had great influence among the young Japanese artists at that time such as Ay-O, Masuo IKEDA, Yukihisa ISOBE, On KAWARA, and Eikoh HOSOE. He challenged various medium such as oil paintings, photo-dessins, prints, and created a unique world of art.
Died in 1960 at the age of 48.
