We will present a collection of varied and astoundingly depicted portraits from 7 artists with great powers of human observation.

 

■Hosoe Eikoh (1933-)

Photographer. Director of Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts. Greatly influenced by Ei Q whom he met in the Demokrat Artists' Association. Gained wide recognition for his series "Barakei (Ordeal of the Rose)" which used Mishima Yukio as a model, and received the Order of Culture in 1970 for his series "Kamaitachi".

 

■Gomi Akira (1953-)

Graduated Nihon University Department of Photography. Moved to France in 1977 and studied under Laurence Sackmann and Michel Berton. Returned to Japan in 1983 and worked mainly for fashion magazines including "Ryuko Tsushin" and "Elle Japon".

 

■E. J. Bellocq (1873-1949)

Photographer. The existing works of Bellocq are all taken in the red light district of Storyville, New Orleans, with the women who worked there as the subjects.

 

■Joseph Cornell (1903-0972)

American writer and sculptor. The pioneer of assemblage. Inspired by surrealism, he also created avant garde experimental film.

 

■Ono Takao (b. 1950)

Based in Italy since 1971. Studied at the National School of Art in Rome, Firenze School of Art, and Instituto Centrale di Restauro di Roma. Paints tempera portraits.

 

■Morimura Yasumasa (1951-)

Graduated Kyoto City University of the Arts. 1985, took a self portrait photograph dressed as van Gogh, and gained recognition for "Art History Series", his self portrait series dressed as famous painters.

 

■Minami Makoto (1919-)

Graduated Kyoto City College of Painting in 1944. Used materials like cardboard, wood, and printing materials, and mixed Japanese painting with collage and frottage to create unique cosmological works with geometric shapes.
