Matazo KAYAMA

Born in Tokyo in 1927. Japanese painter. Graduted from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1949. Taught by Kyujin YAMAMOTO. Joined Sogakai in 1974. Became a professor at Tama Art University from 1966, then at Tokyo University of the Arts in 88.

He began with a series of works of animals, then moved on to landscapes, to rinpa-like decorative paintings, then went from nudes to the world of Chinese paintings; moving between styles constantly kept him a topic of discussion in the world of Japanese painting. He began to makes prints in 1955, using many mediums like copperplate print, lithograph, and silkscreen. He passed away in 2004.
