Kazuo SHIRAGA

Born 1924 in Amagasaki. Graduated from the Department of Japanese painting, Kyoto Municipal School of Painting (presently, Kyoto City University of Arts) in 1948. Later changed to Western painting and studied at Osaka Municipal Institute of Art. Helped form the Zero-kai in 1952. Meeting Jiro YOSHIHARA through the Contemporary Art Panel, became a member of Gutai in 1955.

From then on acted as one of the main members until Gutai’s dissolution in 1972. Recognized for Regional Cultural Merits by the Minister of Education in 1999. Entered the Buddhist priesthood at Enryakuji temple at Mt. Hiei in 1971. Died 2008.
