Chiyu UEMAE |
Born 1920 in Kyoto. Taught himself Nanga (the Southern School of Chinese painting) in 1937, and later changed to Western painting. Studied under Jutaro KURODA in 1947. Impressed by Jiro YOSHIHARA’s work, helped form Gutai in 1954. Remained a member until its dissolution in 1972. |
Received the newcomer’s prize at the 7th Exhibition of Modern Art Association of Japan in 1957, and became a member in 1962 (Withdrew in 1971). |
