Tomoko SAKUMOTO

Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1978. Sakumoto creates three-dimensional porcelain works. Graduated from Okayama Prefectural University Graduate School in 2002 and now teaches ceramics at the Okayama Prefectural University’s Faculty of Design.

She has hosted 5 solo exhibitions in western Japan, namely Okayama and Osaka since 2008. As a part of group exhibitions, she has participated in may art fairs such as Art Central (Hong Kong 2018/2017), Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale #4 (Indonesia 2016), Meer Kunst van het Decoreren (Holland 2015), Art Fair Tokyo (Japan 2014), etc.

Without being tied to the world, Sakumoto explores her own original expression. As a result, she brings us into her unique world of art and design. Using a plastor model for each color and then stacking each castings, Sakumoto creates striped, eye-catching sculptures. In addition, by baking at high temperatures, a sense of transparency is produced. At a glance, the stacking techniques and style of production would be difficult to understand. But the style is the result of Sakumoto sticking to the focusing on her chosen medium as she broadens the possibilities of porcelain, and in doing so, her work has become iconic. It can also be said that her pottery, rather than being intended for practical purposes, are traveling beyond the genre of pottery or sculpture.
