Kishio SUGA (1944-)

Born 1944 in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Graduated from Tama Art University Department of Painting in 1968. While a student in 1967, won the 11th Shell Art Award. A main member of Mono-ha, he arranged unaltered natural and manmade objects such as stones, sticks, and metal into spaces and called those scenes "Situations (environment)", turning them into works. 1968, held his first solo exhibition at TSUBAKI-KINDAI Gallery (Tokyo). 2008,
Suga Kishio Museum opened in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture.
2014-2015, simultaneos solo exhibition at Vangi Sculptural Garden Museum and
MomA, Tokyo was widely acclaimed.

2016, received 57th Mainichi Art Award. 2016, beginning with an exhibition at the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca Foundation in Milan, held a two man show with Carla Black at the MoMA, Scotland, a solo exhibition at Dia Art Foundation in New York, and various exhibitions at museums around the United States. 2017, garnered attention with "Law of Situation" (1971), his installation on water, at VIVA ARTE VIVA at the 57th Venice Biennale. |
