Kohei SUGIURA
|
Born in Tokyo in 1932. Japanese graphic designer, scholar of Asian iconography, professor emeritus at Kobe Design University. Graduated Tokyo University of the Arts Department of Architecture in 1955. Began work in the advertising department of Takashimaya in 1956, but left to become independent after winning the 5th Japan Advertising Artists Club Award with LP JACKET. 1961, won the Mainichi Design Award. Was a visiting professor twice at Ulm School of Design in West Germany from 1964~1966. Awakened to his own Asian sense of aesthetics, Sugiura began to work on magazine covers that resonated well with the table of contents and essay contents based on his personal concept that “a cover is a face”. “SD”, “City Dwelling”, and “Winter Ginka” include representative covers of that time.

From the 1970s, worked seriously on book design that drew out the beauty of the vertically printed Minchotai font. At exhibits like the 8th Tokyo International Print Biennale and “Traditional and Modern Technologies - 12 Japanese Graphic Designers Exhibition”, presented ambitious posters fully utilizing printing technology in a way one could say was only possible by an expert of printing systems like Sugiura. 1982, received the Agency of Cultural Affairs Artist Newcomer Award. 1987~2002, taught at Kobe Design University. 2004, held an exhibition of a compilation of his magazine designs, “Shippu Jinrai” (King Graphic Gallery, Tokyo), that traveled to Paju, South Korea in 2005, and around China in 2006 (Beijing, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Chengdu, other cities). 1997, won the Mainichi Art Award and the Purple Ribbon. From 2010, became director of the Asian Design Institute at Kobe Design University. 2019, was given the Order of the Rising Sun. |
