MAEKAWA Senpan

Born 1888 in Kyoto. Began posting to magazines around 1906. He also produced haiku, tanka and short essays, which were often listed. Studied under ASAI Chu and KANOKOGI Takeshiro in 1907. Moved to Tokyo in 1911. In 1917, produced the Japan’s oldest animation movie “Namakura Gatana” with KOUUCHI Jyunichi. Joined the Japan Creative Print Art Association in 1922. While being known as a comic writer, he worked on woodblock print, developing his unique style with clear carving and humorous modeling with a sense of dynamism. He continued to portray women of the same era, pouring a warm look into the humble and peaceful everyday life of the common people. Known to be one of the 3 masters of Sousaku-hanga along with ONCHI Koshiro and HIRATSUKA Unichi. Passed away in 1960.
