Born in Nagoya in 1934. Around 1948, studied painting with the Shunyo-kai painter MIYAWAKI Haru and decided to become a painter himself. 1952, graduated from the Nagoya City Industrial arts High School Department of Design. 1953, was awarded in the 3rd JAAC awards and became a member of the Nagoya branch of JAAC. Moved to Tokyo in 1955. 1956, worked in advertising at Calpis until around 1959. 1960, joined Nippon Design Center founded by KAMEKURA Yusaku and others, where he became the chief designer (retired in 1964). 1960, received the JAAC members award. 1964, formed Studio Ilang Filing with YOKOO Tadanori and HARADA Tsunao. Worked on posters for TERAYAMA Shuji's Tenjo Sajiki and became a darling of the graphic world. 1982, won the Kodansha Culture Illustration award. 1992, won the 6th Akai Tori Illustration Award for "Kamome no Ie" (YAMASHITA Haruo, Rironsha). 1999, awarded the Purple Ribbon. 2010, awarded the Order of the Rising Sun. 2010, had a solo exhibition at the Kariya City Art Museum. Representative picture books include "Ano ko" (IMAE Yoshitomo, 1966, Rironsha), "Cinderlla" (2007 Froebel-kan), "Ooki na hitomi" (2013, Geijutsu Shinbunsha), "Nihiki no neko" (2017, Bronze Publishing), among many more.
