Born in 1936 in the Mukojima neighborhood of the Sumida Ward in Tokyo. Yanagisawa graduated from Tokyo Polytechnic University in 1957. He then enrolled at Kuwasawa Design School, but left the school within less than half a year. His submission “Untitled Youth” was accepted in Rokkor magazine (by camera maker Minolta), however, Yanagisawa in 1961 was diagnosed with tuberculosis and had to endure two years of treatment. In 1967, he won the Newcomer’s Award of the Japan Association of Photography Critics for A Dialogue of Two Cities and Tappi. Subsequently, Yanagisawa worked primarily for photographic journals. In 1933, he traveled extensively in Italy. After his return to Japan, he was diagnosed with laryngeal and esophageal cancer. While this led to the loss of his voice, Yanagisawa eventually recovered and continued working until his death in 2008, aged 71. |
