John CAGE
Born in Los Angeles in 1912. After graduating high school with honors, Cage entered Pomona College in Claremont, but soon lost interest in his classes and began to make plans to cross to Europe. In Paris, he studied architecture under Ernő Goldfinger in 1930. Following that he composed his first piece in Mallorca; however, none of those works remain today. He returned to the United States in 1931 and studied music under Richard Buhlig.

Later, Henry Cowell introduced Cage to Arnold Schoenberg, whose classes he went on to take at the University of Southern California beteen 1934 and 1937. He is known as a musician, composer, poet, philosopher, and mushroom researcher. With his unique musical theory and expression including the use of "silence" in his diverse portfolio of concerts, John Cage was an experimental musician who broadened the defition of music and had great influence on the avant garde as a whole. His representative works include "4'33"".
