Nam June PAIK
Born in Seoul, Korea in 1932 under Japanese rule. He escaped the Korean War in 1949, by moving to Hong Kong, and then to Japan. There he graduated from the Department of Aesthetics and Art History of the University of Tokyo. He continued his studies in West Germany where he studied music history at the University of Munich. There he got acquainted with John Cage. In 1961 he met George Matunas, the founder of the Fluxus movement, and since then he has been active as a centerpiece of the Fluxus movement. 1963 Announced the world's first video art work using a magnet screen operated TV screen.

In 1964 he moved to the United States. Co-stared and performanced "Robot Opera" with Charlotte Moman. In 1977 he married video artist Kubota Narita. Participated in the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993 as a representative of the German Pavilion, won the Gold Lion Award. He received the Kyoto Prize in 1998. Retrospective exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, 2000. He died at his home in Miami in 2006, at the age of 73.
