Born 1953 in Tokyo, Japan. Graduated from Nihon University College of Art Department of Photography. Moved to Paris in 1977 and studied under Laurence Sackman and Michel Benton until 1983. After returning to Japan, has begun to work with fashion magazine such as "Ryuukou Tsuushin (Trend News)" and "ELLE JAPON". In 1989 he started photographing Japanese girls to record typical women's bodies. In 1991 his first monogram "YELLOWS 1.0" was stopped from sales by the publisher just before its release because of the problem of showing pubic hair. Afetr this incident, all of his books were cut and disposed of. Ironically, this case made him famous. In the end, he released "YELLOWS" as the Japan's first CD-ROM photo collection in 1993.

From then on he released 14 titles such as "YELLOWS2.0", "AMERICANS", "YELLOWS3.0" up until 2000. Taught web design photography at Vantan Design Laboratory.Held exhibition "August Sander and Akira Gomi" in 1997 at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and "YELLOWS RESTART" in 1999. In 1997, held the exhbition "YELLOWS Contemporary Girls Psycho Sexual" at DIGITALOGUE Gallery Tokyo. In 2008, he held "YELLOWS Return To Classic" in Canon Gallery (location moved from Ginza, Nagoya and Umeda, Japan) and "Photographs of Akira GOMI -Yellows 1.0-" at Toki no Wasuremono, Minami Aoyama, Tokyo. In 2009, held the group show "Family plots" with his former assistants.
