オードリー・ヘプバーン、エリザベス・テイラー、マリリン・モンロー、ジェームス・ディーン、ジーン・セバーグ、ソフィア・ローレンなど、数々のスターが主演するハリウッド映画のメイキング・シーンを撮影してきた「スペシャル」フォトグラファー、ボブ・ウィロビー（1927-2009）の遺作写真を50点をご紹介します。

11月13日［水］18時より、ロスからご子息のクリストファーさんを迎えてオープニングを開催します。ぜひご参加ください。

2009年12月、フランス・ヴァンスの自宅で82歳の生涯を終えたウィロビーは、映画会社や雑誌社の社員ではなく、世界中のマスコミに資料を提供する大手スタジオが雇った「スペシャル」とよばれる初のフリーの写真家で、『ライフ』や『ルック』など大手雑誌と映画製作者の仲介者でもあり、ハリウッド全盛期の1950年代初期にこの特殊な職種を最初に開拓したパイオニアでした。

1927年アメリカ、ロサンゼルスに生まれたボブ・ウィロビーは、12歳の誕生日にアーガスＣ-3カメラを与えられ、のちに映像方面へと進みます。高校卒業後は、夜間にUSCシネマ部門で映画について学び、カーン美術学校でデザインを学びます。ハリウッド写真家たちに師事し、写真の技術などのノウハウを吸収するかたわらジャズを対象に写真修業を行ないました。

1954年に映画「スタア誕生」で撮影したジュディ・ガーランドのポートレート写真が『ライフ』誌の表紙を飾り、一躍名を馳せます。以降、オードリー・ヘプバーンの出演作のほか、「バージニア・ウルフなんかこわくない」「卒業」「ローズマリーの赤ちゃん」「カンカン」「チップス先生さようなら」など100を越える映画のメイキング写真を撮影しました。

ウィロビーは、映画製作の歴史的な時代の記録において、理想的なピクチャー・ストーリーを組み込む才能がありました。また、舞台の内外を問わず、数多くの俳優やディレクターたちの撮影の合間に見せる無防備な、あるいはドラマ性の高い瞬間を捉え続けました。

『ライフ』、『ルック』、『ヴォーグ』、『ハーパース・バザー』など7つの雑誌の映画ページを並行して担当し、50年代から70年代初頭までの約20年間に彼の作品が印刷物に掲載されない週はなかったといいます。

さらに、いくつかの技術開発にも携わり、今日では日常的に使われている35mmスチルカメラで使用する静音装置もその一つです。当時、撮影現場においてカメラを無線操作するただ一人の写真家で、それによりほかの写真家では状況的に、あるいは物理的に撮影できない作品を生み出すことを可能としました。ほかにも、特製のブラケットを使用することで、パナビジョンカメラの上や頭上に自身のスチルカメラを配置できるようにしました。

ハリウッドの映画芸術科学アカデミーは、彼の功績を称えて大規模な回顧展を開催し、2004年にはスチルフォトにおける多大な功績によりニューヨークでルーシーアワードを受賞します。

彼の作品はナショナルポートレートギャラリー（ワシントン）、ナショナルポートレートギャラリー（ロンドン）、国立写真美術館（ブラッドフォード、英国）、フランス国立図書館（パリ）、MoMA（ニューヨーク）、映画芸術科学アカデミー（ビバリーヒルズ）、メトロポリタンミュージアム（ニューヨーク）、テートギャラリー（ロンドン）、写真美術館（ニース、フランス）、写真美術館（シャルルロワ、ベルギー）などに所蔵されています。

2009年12月、フランス・ヴァンスの自宅にて逝去（享年82）。

日本で刊行された写真集に『ハリウッド・スペシャル』（1993年、株式会社宝島社）、『オードリー・ヘプバーン：フォトドキュメント　ボブ・ウィロビー写真集』（1993年、朝日新聞社）などがあります。

■ボブ・ウィロビー（1927-2009）
1927年アメリカ・ロサンゼルスで生まれる。12歳のときに父からもらったカメラで写真を撮り始める。高校卒業後、ハリウッドのカメラマンたちの助手として修業し、かたわらジャズを対象に写真修業をした。南カリフォルニア大学の夜間部で写真を学び、専門学校でデザインを学習。やがて演劇や文化イベントを手がけるようになり、雑誌のために映画関連の撮影が増えた。オードリー・ヘプバーン出演作のほか、「地上より永遠に」「スタア誕生」「ヴァージニア・ウルフなんかこわくない」「卒業」など30年あまりの間に120本ほどの映画でスチル写真を撮り、『ライフ』『ヴォーグ』など世界的な雑誌に提供している。写真集として、『プラチナの時代』（1974）、『ロサンゼルスのジャズ』（1990）、『ハリウッド・スペシャル』（1993）などがある。彼の写真は、数多くの国の美術館に展示されている。2009年12月フランス・ヴァンスに永逝（享年82）。
