24th Q Ei Exhibition -Q Ei and Shuzo TAKIGUCHI-

October 26 Sat. - November 2 Sat. 2013
OPEN ALL DAYS DURING EXHIBITION.

Since the first Q Ei exhibition in 1996, we are hosting our 24th Q Ei exhibition at Toki-no-Wasuremono. In this exhibition, we feature relationship between Q Ei and one of his supporter (Later the founder of Q Ei Association after artist's death) Shuzo TAKIGUCHI,

TAKIGUCHI is known as an art critic and also a poet. Whilst planning exhibitions for artists like Q Ei at Takemiya Gallery, supporting young artists, he also produced decalcomania works himself.

In 1954, A print collection with Shuzo TAKIGUCHI's poems "Sphinx" was published by Sadajiro KUBO and Tatsuo FUKUSHIMA.

In this print collection, images by Q Ei, Tamiji KITAGAWA, Shigeru IZUMI, Tadashi KATO, Kojin TONEYAMA, Toshiko AOHARA (UCHIMA) were inserted. It's design and layout was worked by Ryuichi YAMASHIRO.

In this exhibition, along with Q Ei's oil paintings, watercolors and prints, we are exhibiting print/poem collection "Sphinx".

Q Ei (1911-1960)
Q Ei, whose early work was done under his real name of Hideo Sugita, was born in Miyazaki Prefecture in 1911. At age 15, his criticism started appearing in the art magazines "Atelier" and "Mizue". Q Ei’s first collection of photo-dessins, was published in 1936 as "The Reason for Sleep" (Nemuri No Riyu). In 1937, he set up the art organization "Free Art Association" (Jiyu Bijutsu Kyokai). As to criticize the established public group and Japan art world, he set up "Democratic Artists Association" in 1951.Q Ei had great influence among the young Japanese artists at that time such as Ay-O, Masuo IKEDA, Yukihisa ISOBE, On KAWARA, and Eikoh HOSOE. He challenged various medium such as oil paintings, photo-dessins, prints, and created a unique world of art. Died in 1960 at the age of 48.
