We are pleased to present the first solo exhibition of SUGIYAMA Koichiro(b. 1984), a young architect based in Chur, Switzerland. Alongside his architectural activity, he creates drawings and objects.
Sugiyama studied architecture at Nihon University and Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School, and during that time studied abroad at one of the world's leading institutions, ETH Zurich (Peter Markli Studio).
In 2013, he was selected for the Under 30 Architects, an exhibition well known as a gateway to success for young architects. In 2014, he went to Switzerland as a trainee at Atelier Peter Zumthor as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Overseas Artist Training Program. He worked at Atelier Peter Zumthor from 2015 to 2021, and after gaining experience as a workshop chief, worked as a project leader. He is currently active as a freelance architect in Switzerland and Japan.
This exhibition includes a variety of works including the Line & Fill series, watercolor drawings that abstract the surfaces of architecture to be expressed through lines and faces of color; objects that bring drawings into three dimensions; and works of small structures that can be used as furniture. An exhibition catalogue will be published with text by Sugiyama.
Artist will be at the gallery on all days during the exhibition between 11:00-16:00.
【Sugiyama Koichiro Statement】
between craftsman and artist
A skilled craftsman reads the unqiue characteristics of their raw material and uses it in its most logical form to create
their work effectively. It's born like this - and the objects all around us already a part of our lives, how are they made? This process is something I'm interested in.
An artist uses their work to express something difficult to recognize despite being right in front of one's eyes. The heart is struck by the truth that this is experienced beyond the barrier of language.
I've recently realized that it is "between" these two wherein lies the architect I am striving to be.
Line & Fill
Architecture is built with an uncountable number of materials in the thousands.
Like sounds are strung together to make a melody, the fitting together of material that is meaningless by itself can awaken a resonance that seems impossible from just a list of components.
I believe that creating an architectral space, essentially, means creating a new sensation through the ordered placement of materials, as they resonate with each other.
